European Union of Yoga – 40th Annual Convention

The 40th Annual Convention of the European Union of Yoga takes place August 18-23 in Zinal.

I will be giving four lectures around the theme of the event: Attention, Awareness, Awakening.

The lectures are based on my studies with Paul Harvey, core texts and my studies of the Hebrew tradition.

Attention, Awareness, Awakening

Continuous quality of Attention is necessary to maintain Awareness. They are both connected to the heart. However, Awakening demands something else, mostly from beyond our capacity to grasp. How do we cultivate Awakening?

Lecture 1 – Introduction

Reflections and leading questions. The place of the heart, Presentation of related texts: Patanjali Yoga sutra, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, The Bible and a Chassidic tale.

Lecture 2 – The journey from citta to cit

The role of yoga, goals and obstacles based on the teaching of Patanjali Yoga Sutra Chapter I and II.

The journey from svarupe to sarupyam, Clarifying the starting point and self-responsibility in finding the means for accessing and maintaining mindfulness, the 19 means in chapter II and IV.

Lecture 3 – īśvara Praṇidhānā

Cultivating special attitude, special Qualities, root texts from both Yoga and Hebrew Tradition. Saudade – longing for the source: “The spring and the Heart”, “The Song of Songs”.

Lecture 4 – Yoga is relationship and we all have our choices. (YS IV17)

Object are real and so is the mind.

The object is not the same as the mind.

The object is multiple and the mind is multiple.

Both the object and the mind always change therefore, the relationship between them changes as well.

Open discussion and closing.
